Want to Lose Weight? Fewer Americans Say Yes

More Americans are happy with their weight, a new poll suggests.

In a recent Gallup poll, 49 percent of Americans said they would like to lose weight — the first time in at least 25 years that less than half of Americans reported wanting to lose weight, according to the poll. The number is down from a high of 62 percent who said in 2004 that they wanted to lose weight.

The poll also found that 41 percent of Americans said that they would like to stay at their present weight, according to the poll. [The Best Way to Lose Weight Safely]

Similarly, 56 percent of Americans consider their weight to be "about right," whereas 37 percent said they consider themselves to be "very" or "somewhat overweight," according to the poll, which was conducted from Nov. 4 to Nov. 8.

But obesity rates are still on the rise in America.

In fact, the rising percentages of people who are overweight and obese may partly explain why so many Americans consider them selves to be at a normal weight, said Dr. Holly Lofton, the director of the Medical Weight Management Program at New York University Langone Medical Center.

Two-thirds of Americans are overweight or obese, putting people who are in the "normal" weight range in the minority, Lofton told Live Science. (A "normal" weight range means the individual has a BMI that's between 18.5 and 24.9.)

"If everybody looks like their friends, then you think that you're just normal weight," Lofton said. "But you're normal weight by American standards, not by medical standards," she said.

The poll results seem to be in line with this statement — Gallup noted that the vast majority of people in the poll who did say they were overweight also said they would like to lose weight, which "suggests that the decline in the percentage of Americans wanting to lose weight is more attributable to fewer people saying they are overweight, than to overweight people being less likely to say they want to lose weight," according to the Gallup poll, which was posted online on Nov. 27.

Shifting standards of beauty — particularly female beauty — may also have contributed to the change.

Girls don't want to look like waif-like models anymore, and that's certainly a good thing for confidence and body image, Lofton said. But people still need to focus more on their health, even if they are less focused on their BMI, she said.

"You can be in the normal BMI range and still have prediabetes," Lofton said. Likewise, a person can fall in the overweight range and be metabolically healthy, she said.

Indeed, the most recent weight-management guidelines from the American Heart Association and other professional organizations advise that people who are overweight — but who do not have any additional risk factors for heart disease — should try and maintain their weight, rather than lose weight.

Motivation gap?

And although 49 percent of Am ericans reported that they "would like to lose weight," only 24 percent reported that they were "seriously trying to lose weight," according to the poll.

Some people may simply say they want to lose weight because we're exposed to an overwhelming amount of information about weight loss every day, Lofton said.

But as to why only half of those people say they are seriously trying, Lofton noted that the poll only represents one small slice of time.

If you asked the same question at a different time of year, you would probably get the same percentage, but with different people, she said.

You'll have a person who is dieting in the beginning of the year, and not dieting a few months later, she said. Then, a person who didn't diet in the beginning of the year goes on a diet, she said.

Some of this switching on and off diets is likely because dieters often go to extremes, and choose diets that are unsustainable, she said.

For people who want help in taking the first steps toward healthy weight loss, medical providers can be very useful, Lofton said.

A doctor can look over your medications to see if any are contributing to weight loss, or give some simple exercise recommendations, she said. You don't need to go right to a specialist for weight loss, she said.

Here Is the Real Key to Weight Loss (Hint: It’s Not Diet or Exercise)

Dec 31, 2015 News & Views: From the Editors of Health Here Is the Real Key to Weight Loss (Hint: It's Not Diet or Exercise) Photo: Getty Images

    Photo: Getty Images

Practically every client I counsel who struggles with weight loss will say something like, "I just need to workout more." But the truth is it's not that simple, and now a new survey confirms a reality I've observed among many clients—that the real key to weight management is your emotional state. The survey, commissioned by healthcare network Orlando Health, found that 90% of respondents discounted the most crucial factor involved with weight loss: the psychological relationship between food and exercise. The majority (60%) of participants cited diet and exercise to be the biggest barriers, but if that were true I promise you, weight loss would be a whole lot easier.

I've worked with many clients who can afford personal training, even a personal chef or tailored meal delivery services designed for weight loss, and yet despite these resources they wind up sabotaging themselves through emotional eating. If you find yourself in the same boat, focus on your feelings first, not your diet and exercise plan. Here are the top four emotions that tend to derail healthy intentions, along with strategies for altering how they impact your habits.

RELATED: 7 Ways to Keep Alcohol From Ruining Your Diet

    Happiness

While some of my clients are most "on track" when they're happy, others have a pattern of celebratory eating. It makes sense, because it's culturally encouraged to connect food to bonding, praising, and commemorating. This holiday season if you find yourself drawn to too many goodies, either because you're pleased with your holiday bonus, reveling in your time off, or enjoying time with friends and family, try out non-food ways to be jubilant. Rather than cooking or eating plan a craft project or an outing, like ice skating, or a nature walk. And most importantly find ways of expressing your feelings rather than eating them. For some of my clients solo singing does the trick, while others enjoy group activities, like organizing games, from good old fashioned charades to edgy Cards Against Humanity. When you're joyfully occupied you'll be surprised how little you'll think about food.

    Sadness

Many of my clients recall being soothed with food as kids. Whether it was after the loss of a pet goldfish, a skinned knee, or a mean comment from a schoolmate, many of us were comforted with foods like ice cream, chocolate, or mac and cheese. If you find yourself re-living the pattern by feeding yourself after a rough day, experiment with alternatives. Rather than giving yourself an emotional hug by eating let out your feelings by reaching out to a friend. Or try other pacifying behaviors, like taking a warm bath, spending time with a loving pet, or watching a sad movie (sans snacks) and having a good cry. Sometimes letting out your feelings is the best way to prevent yourself from stuffing them down or using food to disconnect.

    Anger

Surprising, but true: One of the regular breakthroughs my clients have is that they often reach for crunchy or chewy foods as a way to address aggression. Whether it's frustration with a boss, coworker, significant other, or a stressful daily commute, coping through munching is a pretty common pattern. In my experience people who tend to "anger eat" can break the pattern by finding other physical ways to let it out. Typically the alternatives involve something that keeps the brain and hands busy, like cleaning, clearing out and organizing closets or drawers, drawing, painting, or even playing video games. If you're successfully (and healthfully) expressing your aggression, you're far less likely to reach for foods like chips or licorice.

    Fear

When I feel anxious or worried I tend to lose my appetite. But for some of my clients eating becomes the primary distraction that allows them to shut off the fear, at least temporarily. I had one client who told me that between meals and snacks she felt compelled to suck on candy or chew gum, because constantly engaging with eating helped her not focus on worrying.

That's an extreme situation, but certainly many people who nervously nibble even a few times a day can consume hundreds of extra calories. If this is your pattern, try to zero in on what will best help you deal with your feelings. Mediation, deep breathing, yoga, or stretching may help some people. For others talking through fears, or making concrete lists that address what you can and cannot change about what's making you anxious is the most effective way to cope, and curb the desire to eat.

Carrie Fisher’s 35-Pound Weight Loss For ‘Star Wars’: Her Diet and Workout Tips

Carrie Fisher looks fantastic after her 35-pound weight loss for "Star Wars: The Force Awakens," and is furious at body-shamers who say she hasn't aged well.

Fisher, 59, slammed Internet trolls who said she looks old in "Star Wars 7."

"Please stop debating about whether or not I aged well," Carrie wrote on Twitter. "Unfortunately it hurts all 3 of my feelings. My BODY hasn't aged as well as I have. Blow us."

Fisher is outraged by the obsessive focus on her weight and appearance, saying youth and beauty are not accomplishments.

"We treat beauty like an accomplishment and that is insane," said Carrie. "Everyone in LA says, 'Oh you look good!' and you listen for them to say you've lost weight. It's never 'How are you?' or 'You seem happy!'"

The 5-foot-1 Fisher was a sex siren who weighed 105 pounds in 1978 when she starred as Princess Leia in the original Star Wars trilogy.

As the years progressed, she ballooned to 180 pounds thanks to a sedentary lifestyle and chronic overeating.

Carrie has since lost 35 p0unds, thanks to a 1,500-calorie-a-day diet and intense workouts, Examiner reported.

Fisher slimmed down to a size eight in nine months by following a 1,500-calorie-a-day diet and doing 45-minute cardio workouts on the treadmill or elliptical trainer five days a week.

Carrie said she hated looking at her own reflection in the mirror in recent years because of her weight.

"I couldn't look in the mirror," says Fisher. "I saw pictures of myself where I didn't look like myself. I thought I was getting old. It turns out [I] was mostly getting fat." carrie fisher weight lossFisher than regained the weight shortly afterward and suffered several public emotional breakdowns.

In 2013, Carrie was hospitalized after suffering a bipolar episode on a cruise ship where she had been performing.

Fisher, who has been open about her past drug abuse, addiction to prescription medication, and bipolar disorder, continues to get electro-convulsive therapy every six weeks to keep her mood swings under control.

"[Electric shock therapy] just puts you to sleep," said Fisher. "There are no convulsions. It actually really helps. I don't have to take as much medication. It gets a bad rap. The only way it's shown in films is as a punishment."

Carrie discussed her drug addiction, electroshock therapy and weight struggles in her memoirs, Wishful Drinking, and Postcards from the Edge.

Workout Marilyn Monroe Style: Low Carb, Free Weights, Yoga, Beauty And Weight Loss Tips [Videos, Photos]

Workout, Marilyn Monroe style? Beauty and weight loss tips from Marilyn Monroe? How can it be? For decades, Marilyn Monroe has been the epitome of Hollywood glamour and an icon of beauty. Many women have held to the standard that Marilyn Monroe set and would love to have an inside look at her weight loss, beauty, and workout routine. While Marilyn Monroe may have long passed, a video has surfaced showing the bleached-blonde beauty as she works out in a bikini top and a pair of jeans. During the Marilyn Monroe workout video, you can see Marilyn as she does floor work, lifts weights, and stands on her head while performing Yoga. For many modern women, the idea that Marilyn Monroe's workout routine is so similar to recommendations today is mind boggling. If you study the video below of Marilyn Monroe working out closely, you'll notice she's wearing high heels. You won't need to add the high heels or jeans to your workout in order to get the same benefits. As for Marilyn's b eauty and weight loss tips, it's interesting to note that she described a low carb, high protein diet and made regular use of free weights.

In Sept. 1952, Marilyn Monroe granted an interview with Pageant magazine and gave full details on her workout routine, her beauty regimen and shared her weight loss tips. Some of the tips that Marilyn Monroe shared in the 50s is the same advice doctors and weight loss experts are advising today.

For example, Marilyn Monroe described herself as always needing to eat more food and never paying attention to exercise. She stated that she spent at least 10 minutes in the morning lifting free weights. While modern recommendations are to exercise for at least 20 minutes, new recommendations state that you can break the time into smaller increments. One study showed that breaking a 30 minute workout routine into three, 10 minute routines, actually provided additional health benefits, according to the NY Times.

Marilyn Monroe shared her early morning beauty tips as well as the first exercise she does as her early morning workout.

"Each morning, after I brush my teeth, wash my face and shake off the first deep layer of sleep, I lie down on the floor beside my bed and begin my first exercise. It is a simple bust-firming routine which consists of lifting five-pound weights from a spread-eagle arm position to a point directly above my head. I do this 15 times, slowly. I repeat the exercise another 15 times from a position with my arms above my head. Then, with my arms at a 45-degree angle from the floor, I move my weights in circles until I'm tired. I don't count rhythmically like the exercise people on the radio; I couldn't stand exercise if I had to feel regimented about it."

Yoga is revered for its weight loss benefits, overall impact on beauty and is a highly recommended workout. Marilyn Monroe loved Yoga and in the video below, you can see her as she is going through makeup tests, followed by a photo shoot of various Yoga poses.

In addition to Marilyn's workout regimen, she also shared her diet and weight loss tips. What Marilyn Monroe described to Pageant was a low carb diet. In the picture below, you can see what Marilyn ate for her morning meal: raw eggs in milk. Marilyn described her diet as "bizarre" and even though weight loss was inevitable due to the high protein intake, she indulged in a hot fudge sundae after her drama class.

"BREAKFAST. I've been told that my eating habits are absolutely bizarre, but I don't think so. Before I take my morning shower, I start warming a cup of milk on the hot plate I keep in my hotel room. When it's hot, I break two raw eggs into the milk, whip them up with a fork, and drink them while I'm dressing. I supplement this with a multi-vitamin pill, and I doubt if any doctor could recommend a more nourishing breakfast for a working girl in a hurry."

"DINNER. My dinners at home are startlingly simple. Every night I stop at the market near my hotel and pick up a steak, lamb chops or some liver, which I broil in the electric oven in my room. I usually eat four or five raw carrots with my meat, and that is all. I must be part rabbit; I never get bored with raw carrots."

"P.S. It's a good thing, I suppose, that I eat simply during the day, for in recent months I have developed the habit of stopping off at Wil Wright's ice cream parlor for a hot fudge sundae on my way home from my evening drama classes. I'm sure that I couldn't allow myself this indulgence were it not that my normal diet is composed almost totally of protein foods."

That's so hot…wait, is she drinking raw eggs and milk?!? Meh, still hot. RT @HistoricalPics: Marilyn Monroe pic.twitter.com/9ZBwNAzE5g

    — Mikie (@19Mikie99) December 23, 2014

While Marilyn Monroe's diet was noticeably lacking in several vegetables, she was taking a multi vitamin. This diet is actually quite similar to that of other low carb diets such as Atkins. However; many of today's diets include more vegetables and fresh salads and would skip the ice cream sundaes.

The Future of Obesity Treatment: What Works - Healthline

As many of us take on New Year's resolutions to shed pounds, a new study shows which types of treatment work best. The study offers long-term data to support the use of intensive lifestyle intervention (ILI) as a viable weight loss tool.

According to more than eight years of data from the Look AHEAD study, published in the journal Obesity, ILI yields better results than a less rigorous diabetes support and education (DSE) program by encouraging patients to eat right and exercise through frequent group and individual counseling sessions.

Researchers found that people who used ILI attained an average weight loss of 8.6 percent during their first year, and 4.7 percent by the fourth year, compared to those in the DSE group, who lost just 0.7 percent in the first year and one percent by the fourth year.

By the eighth year of the study, 50 percent of patients using ILI had lost an average of more than five percent of their initial weight, while only 37 percent of DSE participants saw the same results.

Moreover, almost 40 percent of patients using ILI who lost more than 10 percent of their initial weight during the first year maintained that weight loss for a full eight years, showing that long-term weight control is possible with ILI.

Thomas Wadden, Ph.D., a professor of psychology at the University of Pennsylvania and author of the new study, said those who participated in the study ate a well-balanced diet of 1,200 to 1,800 calories per day and increased their physical activity level as part of the ILI.

    4 Easy-to-Keep New Year's Resolutions for Better Health »

Wadden said that while some people may be able to lose weight and build healthy habits on their own, others benefit from lifestyle counseling by a registered dietitian or other health professional. With long-term data showing that ILI works, weight loss programs in 2014 and beyond will likely center on this type of counseling and group interaction.

    Obesity Is a Disease—Now What?

In 2013, the American Medical Association (AMA) classified obesity as a disease. While some experts believe that the designation paves the way for better treatment and insurance coverage, others disagree.

Wadden believes that the AMA's decision will help increase insurance coverage for weight loss interventions like bariatric surgery.

"That would facilitate more overweight and obese Americans losing weight to improve their health and quality of life," he said.

But Robert Lustig, M.D., a clinical professor at the University of California, San Francisco, points out that the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) classified obesity as a disease in 2004, and people still packed on pounds.

"It didn't make a difference in our expanding waistlines then, and it won't now," Lustig said.

Lustig said that while there has lately been an increase in media attention and federal funding for obesity studies, this does not necessarily equate to any change in practice. He said that the only thing that will change is that physicians will be required to document in their charts that they've told their patients to diet and exercise, or they won't get paid for the visit, he said.

"That's not going to reduce anyone's waistline," he added.

Technology Will Power Future Obesity Treatments

Knowing that long-term weight loss is possible could inspire more overweight Americans to seek help through ILI and other methods.

Wadden believes that technology, including smartphones and social media, "holds promise" for increasing access to effective weight loss programs. Although making weight loss interventions available to all overweight and obese Americans is a challenge, he said that technology may help to overcome that obstacle.

pursuits-based intervention fails to enhance results in behavioral weight-loss ... - Healio

Adults with overweight or obesity who participated in a four-week intervention that emphasized consuming only at five prespecified meal times whereas keeping a consistent sleep/wake agenda lost vastly less weight in a behavioral weight-loss program that adopted vs. adults who attended a handle application, in line with research in weight problems Science & apply.

Kathryn E. Demos, PhD, assistant professor of psychiatry and human habits at Brown college and the burden control and Diabetes analysis core in windfall, Rhode Island, and colleagues analyzed facts from 25 adults more youthful than 65 years with a BMI between 25 kg/m² and forty five kg/m² who were weight good (within 5% of their present physique weight throughout the previous 6 months). Researchers carried out baseline assessments of physique weight and randomly assigned contributors to either weekly hobbies intervention classes for 4 weeks (n = 12; 75% women; imply age, 55 years; all white; mean baseline BMI, 32.eight kg/m²) or to weekly training-simplest control group classes for four weeks (n = 13; 69% women; imply age, 50 years; seventy seven% white; suggest baseline BMI, 34 kg/m²). members in the pursuits intervention group have been prompt to consume only at five prespecified times day after day (three nutrition and two snacks) and to preserve a constant sleep/wake sched ule that allowed for eight hours of sleep nightly; contributors scheduled ingesting times in meals diaries.

handle group members attended weekly academic sessions on the occurrence and health penalties of obesity and the importance of fruit and vegetable consumption; no habits change suggestions had been taught or promoted. contributors in both groups were requested not to attempt weight loss during the four-week length.

physique weight assessments had been repeated and all individuals all started an 18-week behavioral weight-loss intervention with six weekly meetings, adopted by using 12 weeks of biweekly conferences incorporating eating regimen (a 1,200-1,500 kcal/day food plan, based on weight), exercise (increasing actual undertaking to at the least 200 minutes per week) and behavioral therapy (self-monitoring, purpose surroundings, stimulus control and issue solving). contributors acquired $25 compensation for finishing each the four-week and 18-week programs.

participants in the hobbies group lost drastically less weight within the first 6 weeks of behavioral intervention vs. the handle community (suggest, –2.3 kg vs. –4.6 kg; P = .04) and lost less weight than controls over the total 18-week application (mean, –three.2 kg vs. –5.8 kg; P = .23). The hobbies group reported a rise in "on-time table" ingesting and a lessen in "off-time table" consuming throughout the 4-week hobbies intervention, however there was no change in on-agenda sleep patterns.

"The speculation that engaged on setting up fit ingesting and sleep routines previous to the start of a [behavioral weight-loss] program would increase weight loss was not supported," the researchers wrote. "despite the fact the change between corporations at the conclusion of treatment was now not statistically colossal with the particularly small sample, this finding represents a medium size effect ... with the pursuits intervention group dropping less weight than [the control group] ordinary." – through Regina Schaffer

Weight Loss Programs Tailored to a Person's Genome May Be Coming Soon

Weight Loss Programs Tailored to a Person's Genome May Be Coming SoonPhoto credit: Bill Branson, NIHAUSTIN, Texas — Some health experts predict that the next big advance in helping overweight people achieve a healthier weight will be to use an individual's genetic data to customize diets and physical activity plans, an approach known as "precision weight loss." A recent summary report on the genetics of weight loss, developed by some of the leading experts in this field, finds that the biggest challenge to realizing this dream is the need for better analytical tools for discovering the relationships between genetics, behavior and weight-related diseases.

The report, which appears in the January edition of the journal Obesity, summarizes what scientists currently know about factors that influence weight loss and weight regain, and it identifies how genetic information and data collection from noninvasive, portable devices may soon be incorporated into research and weight loss treatment.

"I think within five years, we'll see people start to use a combination of genetic, behavioral and other sophisticated data to develop individualized weight management plans," says Molly Bray, a geneticist and professor of nutritional sciences at the University of Texas at Austin, who led the working group.

Bray speculates that in the future, patients might submit saliva samples for gene sequencing, along with using automated sensors to collect information about factors such as their environment, diet, activity and stress. A computer algorithm would take this information and provide patients with specific recommendations to achieve their target weight.

Bray says the falling cost of genome sequencing, plus portable monitors (such as Fitbit) to track in real time people's behavior and environment, mean that scientists already have the ability to collect the kinds of data they need to do the fundamental research behind precision weight loss. According to the study, the real challenge now for researchers is to develop the tools to analyze this flood of data.

"We are pretty good at helping people lose weight in the short term," says Bray. "But the stats on long-term weight loss are pretty dismal. We still don't understand the process of weight regain very well, either from a behavioral or a biological standpoint."

Scientists have uncovered some of the genetic basis for weight-related diseases, such as the discovery of a gene that appears to cause energy from food to be stored as fat rather than be burned. Some reporters have dubbed it the "obesity gene," but Bray cautions that it's not so simple.

"When you go back and see how much of the variation in this gene accounts for the variation in body size in the general population, it's really small," says Bray. "So that highlights that there are going to be several genes involved with obesity, and they're going to interact with each other in complicated ways. And that's certainly true of weight loss and maintenance too."

Obesity puts a large burden on the health care system and increases an individual's risk for a number of other diseases including diabetes, cardiovascular disease and cancer. It's also rising at an alarming rate around the world.

"Obesity is one of the gravest problems of our times," says Bray. "Obviously prevention would be the best approach, but there are literally millions of individuals who are currently obese and are in dire need of more effective strategies for long-term weight loss that will ultimately improve overall health."

Multiple research projects have shown that about half of the variation in people's body mass index can be attributed to genetic factors, while the rest is due to environmental factors, including diet and exercise. For example, depending on a person's specific genetic makeup, exercise might be less effective at reducing weight for some people compared with others.

"When people hear that genes may be playing a role in their weight loss success, they don't say, 'Oh great, I just won't exercise any more,'" says Bray. "They actually say 'Oh thank you. Finally someone acknowledges that it's harder work for me than it is for others.' And then I think they're a little more forgiving of themselves, and they're more motivated to make a change." This report grew out of a workshop convened by the National Institutes of Health in 2014 titled "Genes, Behaviors, and Response to Weight Loss Interventions." It synthesizes a broad range of research from institutions around the world.

"We've made great strides in our understanding of what drives eating behavior, how fat cells are formed and how metabolism is altered before and after the onset of obesity," says Bray. "The time is ripe to take this wealth of data and find ways to utilize it more effectively to treat people in need."

The study's co-authors include Ruth Loos (the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai); Jeanne M. McCaffery (the Alpert Medical School of Brown University/The Miriam Hospital); Charlotte Ling and Paul Franks (Ska°ne University Hospital, Sweden), George Weinstock (The Jackson Laboratory for Genomic Medicine, Connecticut), Michael Snyder (Stanford University School of Medicine), Jason Vassy (Brigham and Women's Hospital and Harvard Medical School), and Tanya Agurs-Collins (National Cancer Institute, National Institutes of Health), among others.

The study was funded by the National Cancer Institute and the National Institutes of Health.
